The Pru West Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has embarked on shop-to-shop sensitization visits in the Prang and Abuah communities to educate artisans on tax compliance and the importance of supporting the government’s revenue mobilization efforts.
The exercise formed part of the Directorate’s quarterly activities under the theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in a Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility.” The engagements were conducted at the various shops of artisans in the two communities.
The sensitization focused on the importance of paying taxes, the effects of tax evasion and avoidance, and the consequences of non-compliance with tax laws.
Speaking to Madam Sarrah at her shop, With God All Things are Possible Beauty Saloon, in Abuah, the Senior Civic Education Officer (SCEO), Mr. Mujeeb Musah, explained that taxes are compulsory levies imposed by the government on income, profits, property, goods and services to generate revenue for public purposes.
He urged the artisans to accurately declare their incomes and pay their taxes to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), stressing that contributing through taxation was a collective responsibility towards national development.
At a similar engagement with Madam Mary Amponsah of Mary Amponsah Saloon, the Civic Education Officer (CEO), Mr. Musah Abass, explained that taxes were imposed by both the central government and local assemblies.
He mentioned taxes administered by the central government, including income tax, Value Added Tax (VAT), National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL), and Customs and Excise Duties. He also highlighted local revenue sources such as property rates, business operating permits, market tolls and other local levies collected by assemblies to support their internally generated funds.
Mr. Abass encouraged the artisans to remain responsible citizens by continuously paying their taxes and demanding accountability from duty bearers on the utilization of public funds.
In all, thirteen shops were visited in Prang and Abuah. The artisans expressed appreciation to the NCCE Pru West Directorate for the initiative, describing the sensitization as insightful and useful in deepening their understanding of tax compliance and civic responsibility.
