NCCE Sekyere Central Uses Radio to Promote Adolescent Health and GBV Awareness

Radio continues to serve as a powerful tool for educating communities and challenging harmful social norms. In line with this, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Sekyere Central Directorate, has taken its civic education campaign to the airwaves of GBC–SCARP Radio, broadcasting on 89.9 MHz in Asante Mampong, to educate listeners across the Sekyere Central District on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (ASRHR) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The two-day radio programme provided an educational platform for discussing issues affecting adolescent boys and girls, with particular attention to harmful social norms, misconceptions surrounding adolescent sexual and reproductive health, and the stigma often faced by survivors of gender-based violence.

During the discussions, resource persons from the NCCE, the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) addressed several important topics, including adolescent pregnancy prevention and family planning; myths and misconceptions surrounding ASRHR; gender equality and respectful relationships; the prevention of GBV, including available support services and reporting mechanisms; and access to adolescent-friendly health services.

Furthermore, the resource persons highlighted the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment where adolescents can access accurate health information, build healthy relationships, and seek assistance without fear of discrimination or stigma.

The discussions also emphasised the need for community members to challenge harmful beliefs and practices that expose adolescents to abuse, discrimination, and other health-related risks.

Through this radio engagement, the NCCE Sekyere Central Directorate, in collaboration with DOVVSU and the Ghana Health Service, continues to promote public education, adolescent well-being, gender equality, and awareness of available support services within the district.
