For many small business owners, paying taxes may seem like a burden. However, taxes play a vital role in national development, funding essential infrastructure and social amenities that benefit communities. Recognizing the importance of tax compliance, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Sekyere Central Directorate, has engaged members of the Hairdressers Association in Nsuta to educate them on their tax obligations as citizens.
During the engagement, the resource person and Sekyere Central District Director of the NCCE, Mr. Gordon Yeboah Opoku, explained that Chapter Six, Article 41(j) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana places a responsibility on citizens to declare their income honestly and pay their taxes.
Furthermore, Mr. Opoku emphasized that tax revenue contributes significantly to national development, particularly in the provision of infrastructure and social amenities. He cautioned the participants against tax evasion and the under-declaration of income, explaining that such practices constitute offences under the law.
In addition to tax compliance, the engagement addressed child protection and responsible parenting. The participants were encouraged to take proper care of their children and wards, especially in view of concerns about child trafficking and other threats to children's safety.
Meanwhile, apprentices were advised to respect their masters and mistresses and approach their training with dedication and seriousness. This, they were told, would help them acquire the necessary skills and discipline to become responsible and productive members of society.
The engagement forms part of the NCCE's efforts to promote constitutional awareness, responsible citizenship and compliance with civic obligations among various groups within the community.
