The National Commission for Civic Education, with support from the French Embassy in Ghana, has organised one of its flagship programmes, “Civic Fest”, a youth-focused, school-based contemporary programme introduced in 2024. The concept behind this initiative is to leverage entertaining avenues to rekindle patriotism and civic consciousness among the youth.
The 2026 edition was aimed at increasing awareness of information disorder, its repercussions, and measures that can be adopted to mitigate the adverse effects of the menace; hence, it was held under the theme, “Youth Media Literacy and Disinformation Awareness”.
In an opening remark, the Chairperson of the Commission, Mad. Kathleen Addy stressed that information disorder has become an existential threat and must be met with urgent steps of equal measure to ensure the canker is nipped in the bud. She further underscored that some information intended for good ends up causing more harm to recipients due to lack of verification and due diligence on the part of the sender or bearer. She thus urged the gathering to ensure the facts, and otherwise any information, are ascertained before sharing.
Meanwhile, exploring creativity and innovation, students from the participating Senior High Schools told stories from varied angles about how false information or fake news is conceptualised and spread, emphasising the dangers recipients are exposed to.
Six (6) schools in the Greater Accra Region, namely West Africa Senior High School, Achimota School, Forces Senior High Technical School, St. Mary’s Senior High School, Presbyterian Boys Senior High School, and Tema Senior High School, participated and went head-to-head with one another through activities such as Art Display, Drama, Spoken Word, Rap, and Dance.
When all was said and done, Forces Senior High Technical School was adjudged the winner, making them the reigning champions for two consecutive editions. Emerging as first runner-up was Achimota School, followed closely by Presbyterian Boys Senior High School in third place.
Assorted prize packages included cash prizes, certificates, medallions, copies of the pocket-sized 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, plaques, and a trophy for the winner, among others.
