NCCE Ga West Marks Citizenship Week Celebration at Mayera Basic School

As part of the 2026 Citizenship Week Celebration, the Ga West Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education organised a civic education programme for pupils of Mayera Basic School at Amasaman.

The programme, held on Friday, 29th May 2026, was organised under the theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in a Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility,” with the sub-theme, “Growing Up Digital: The Ghanaian Child Upholding the Constitution Online.” It sought to educate pupils on responsible digital citizenship and the need to uphold constitutional values in both physical and digital spaces.

Addressing the pupils, the resource person, Mrs. Edith Akpene Awudor, educated them on the responsible use of digital platforms and the importance of observing their rights and responsibilities under the 1992 Constitution while online.

She highlighted the dangers associated with misinformation, disinformation, cybercrime, digital fraud, cyberbullying, and online abuse. Mrs. Awudor urged the pupils to verify information before sharing it and to avoid posting or forwarding content that could mislead others, damage reputations, or undermine peace.

The pupils were also encouraged to become responsible digital citizens by demonstrating respect, honesty, accountability, and discipline in their online interactions. Mrs. Awudor explained that the internet should be used to support learning, positive communication, creativity, and responsible participation in society.

She further emphasised that safeguarding Ghana’s democratic values and constitutional principles is a shared responsibility that extends to the digital space. According to her, children must learn early to use digital platforms in ways that protect the dignity and rights of others.

The interactive session gave pupils the opportunity to ask questions and share their experiences on internet use and online safety. The engagement formed part of the NCCE’s efforts to promote constitutional awareness, civic responsibility, and responsible digital citizenship among school children across the country.
