The Dormaa Central Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education has educated the public on democracy and freedom of speech during a radio sensitisation programme on Gift FM 105.5 morning show, “Anopa Bosou.”
Held on 26th May 2026, the engagement formed part of the Commission’s efforts to deepen citizens’ understanding of democratic governance, civic responsibility, and constitutional freedoms.
Featured on the programme were the Municipal Director of the NCCE, Mr. Seth Broni Tagborloh, Senior Civic Education Officer, Madam Sandra Obour Sarfowaa, Mr. Samuel Azerigo, and Civic Education Officer, Mr. Adjei Patrick.
Speaking during the programme, Mr. Tagborloh highlighted the Commission’s mandate to promote and sustain Ghana’s democracy through civic education. He noted that Ghana’s Fourth Republic remains the country’s longest democratic dispensation, due in part to continuous civic engagement and citizen participation.
According to the resource persons, democracy thrives on the rule of law, periodic elections, protection of citizens’ rights, and responsible participation in governance. They further educated listeners on freedom of speech as a constitutional right guaranteed under the 1992 Constitution.
While emphasising the importance of free expression, the team cautioned that it is not absolute and must be exercised responsibly within the limits of the law, including laws relating to defamation, misinformation, disinformation, cybercrime, and cybersecurity. They noted that responsible expression helps protect the rights and reputations of others, promote peaceful coexistence, and safeguard national stability.
Listeners were encouraged to participate actively in democratic processes, express their views responsibly, verify information before sharing, and use both traditional and digital media platforms to promote peace, truth, tolerance, and national development.
