NCCE Celebrates Constitution Week in Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem Municipal, Highlights Digital Age Challenges

The NCCE has underscored the urgent need for responsible digital citizenship as it marks this year’s Constitution Week Celebration. Instituted in 2001, the Week commemorates the nation’s return to constitutional democratic rule and continues to serve as a platform for reflection on civic duty.

This year’s theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in the Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility,” draws attention to the growing influence of digital platforms in shaping public discourse. Social media, online news outlets, and messaging applications have become vital tools for communication and civic engagement.

Yet, alongside these opportunities, the digital age has unleashed new threats. Officials at the Municipal office of the Commission warned of the dangers posed by misinformation, disinformation, cybercrime, impersonation, invasion of privacy, and online abuse, particularly against children and women. These risks, they noted, often escalate during sensitive national events such as elections, undermining peace and stability.

Citizens were reminded that constitutional principles extend into the digital space; hence, the freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly and within the law. Additionally, Article 41 places a duty on every citizen to uphold and defend the Constitution.

The engagement also established that false information, hate speech, and digital fraud carry real consequences for individuals and the nation, emphasising the need for the cultivation of responsible online behaviour to safeguard peace, security, and national development.

Participants were further urged to remain vigilant and to use digital tools in ways that strengthen democracy rather than weaken it. By embracing truth, respect, and accountability online, citizens can help secure the nation’s constitutional values in an increasingly digital world.
