NCCE Agortime-Ziope Educates Pupils on Online Safety as Citizenship Week is Marked

The Agortime-Ziope District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged pupils of Ziope D/A Junior High School, Ziope R/C Primary School and Takuve D/A Basic School as part of activities marking this year’s Annual Citizenship Week Celebration.

The engagement, held in the Agortime-Ziope District, focused on the theme “Growing Up Digital: The Ghanaian Child Upholding the Constitution Online.” It sought to educate pupils on responsible online behaviour, digital safety and the need to respect the rights and dignity of others while using social media and other digital platforms.

Addressing the pupils, Miss Rita Asanya of the NCCE and Mr Charles Osborne Akpordor urged the children to be cautious about the kind of information they share online. They admonished them to avoid spreading false information and to always verify content before forwarding or reposting it.

The speakers also advised the pupils to be careful when accepting friend requests on social media, explaining that not all online accounts are genuine and that some people may use fake identities to deceive children. They encouraged the learners to seek guidance from parents, guardians, or teachers whenever they encounter suspicious messages or unfamiliar persons online.

Miss Asanya and Mr Akpordor further cautioned the pupils against watching, sharing, or posting nude pictures and other inappropriate content online. They explained that Ghana has laws that regulate online activities and that these laws are intended to protect children and promote responsible use of digital platforms.

The officials emphasized that as Ghanaian children grow up in a digital world, they must use the internet responsibly, respect the Constitution, protect their personal information, and contribute positively to the online community.

The engagement formed part of the NCCE’s continuing efforts to deepen civic awareness among young people and prepare them to become responsible citizens both offline and online.
