Director of Programmes at the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Dr. Imurana Mohammed, has called on all Ghanaians who have the country at heart to consider nation-building as a responsibility of every good citizen.
Addressing the Accra Technical Training Institute (ATTC) community, Dr. Mohammed emphasized that it takes a joint effort to succeed in a mission geared towards national development, adding that it is not enough to only pay attention to ones personal endeavours.
He expressed worry about how present citizens are having to turn a collective society like Ghana into a rather individualistic one; thereby staying fixated only on themselves and their families, losing sight of a sense of responsibility to their community and the country at large. “The sense of community that existed among our forefathers and underpinned the attainment of our independence is almost non-existent among us in the current times”, he asserted.
The Programmes Director thus urged the teachers and students to ensure that their actions and other undertakings should not sideline the interest of the country, drawing their attention to the fact that Ghana is the only country we can claim ownership to.
Meanwhile, he charged them to hold on firmly to the values of patriotism, sense of belongingness, and national unity, among others, indicating that such civic values are the light that would guide our journey towards developing our country.
He additionally intimated that while it is prudent for citizens to seek accountability from leadership, they should be mindful of their respective roles towards nation-building as well. This, according to him, puts one in good standing to constructively criticize authorities at the helm of affairs.
