KUMASI TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY HOSTS NCCE KUMASI METRO TWICE

Mr. Awal Iddrisu, a Senior Civic Education Officer at the NCCE, spoke to students of the Kumasi Technical University on civic responsibility, leadership, and national development.

He was a guest speaker at the One-Week Celebration of the Ghana Muslim Students Association (GMSA), Kumasi Technical University Chapter. Speaking on the subtheme, “Empowering Minds in the Digital Age: Purpose, Influence and Responsible Citizenship,” he highlighted the importance of responsible citizenship in an increasingly digital society.

During his presentation, Mr. Iddrisu explained the mandate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) as provided under Articles 231–239 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana and the National Commission for Civic Education Act, 1993 (Act 452). He noted that the Commission has largely fulfilled its constitutional mandate of educating Ghanaians on their civic rights and responsibilities. As evidence, he observed that while none of Ghana’s previous constitutions endured for as long as a decade, the 1992 Constitution—despite provisions that may require amendment—has provided the country with constitutional governance, peace, and stability for thirty-three years.

In a separate engagement, Mr. Iddrisu addressed students of the Department of Accounting and Accounting Information Systems on civic consciousness and the qualities required to serve as an officer of the National Commission for Civic Education. The interactive session gave students the opportunity to ask questions on career prospects, the work of the NCCE, the job market, and the challenges he encountered during his own academic journey.

Mr. Iddrisu emphasized that the values enshrined in the Preamble to the 1992 Constitution—including the protection and preservation of fundamental human rights and freedoms, justice, probity, accountability, the rule of law, national unity, and stability—should guide the conduct of every Ghanaian.

He concluded by stressing that sustainable national development and lasting peace can only be achieved when citizens respect one another, uphold the rule of law, and safeguard the rights and freedoms of others. He encouraged the students to become responsible citizens who contribute positively to their communities and to Ghana’s democratic development.
