KNOW YOUR DUTIES AS A CITIZEN OF GHANA

Many of us may not be familiar with our duties as citizens of Ghana as stated in Article 41 of the 1992 Constitution. The NCCE is highlighting these duties captured in the Constitution. Article 41(a) states that Citizens must ‘promote the prestige and good name of Ghana and respect the symbols of the nation’.

What does it take to do this?

As a good citizen of Ghana, you should identify with the national symbols and respect them as such. The Ghana Flag, The Coat of Arms, The Ghanaian Currency and The State Sword are examples of national symbols. Citizens must accord respect and high regard these national symbols as they best identify us as Ghanaians.

What does it take to promote the good name of Ghana?

Promoting the good name of Ghana means as citizens we must have a sense of patriotism in our day-to-day activities. Citizens must have a sense of service for our country by being responsible and duty-bound. We can promote the good name of Ghana by having a national sense of care for the vulnerable, respect for human rights and social justice, and a sense of accountability on the part of both leaders and citizens.

Promoting the good name of Ghana requires the commitment of the citizenry to nation-building. Our leaders must promote the good name of Ghana by exemplary leadership. Ghana is all we have and it’s our duty as citizens to uphold her good name. Our actions and inactions as citizens of Ghana either promotes or demeans the good name of Ghana.
