Good Citizenship Begins with Understanding Our Rights and Responsibilities - NCCE Chairperson

The Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Kathleen Addy, emphasised the importance of active citizenship during a Civic Fest event held at the Church of Pentecost, Aboom Central, in Cape Coast. The occasion united pupils from St. Monica’s Primary/JHS, Catholic Jubilee Boys Primary/JHS, and Donewell Methodist Primary/JHS, who displayed Ghana’s rich culture through poetry, drama, and traditional dance performances centred on the theme, “Protecting Our Environment: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.”

Addressing the gathering, the Chairperson emphasised that good citizenship goes beyond knowing one’s rights; it also involves fulfilling responsibilities to the community and the nation. She explained that good citizens participate in community activities, keep their surroundings clean, and vote responsibly during elections. “Our Constitution is the rule book of the land, and every Ghanaian must understand it to know their rights and duties,” she stated.

She further highlighted that while citizens have rights such as freedom of speech, the right to vote, and access to education, they also bear the responsibility of being loyal to Ghana, reporting wrongdoing, and helping maintain peace and order. The Chairperson encouraged pupils to practice what they learn about citizenship, stressing that civic education is not only about knowledge but also about action.

The event, which was attended by regional and district directors of the Commission, sponsors, partners, and judges, featured exciting performances that demonstrated pupils’ understanding of civic values. Special prizes were awarded to participants who excelled in answering civic education questions, as the NCCE continues to promote responsible citizenship and environmental consciousness among the youth.
