CENTRAL REGIONAL NCCE ENGAGES FIRE SERVICE

The Central Regional Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), as part of this year’s Constitution Week Celebration has engaged officers of the Central Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire. The event was held at the Forecourt Regional Fire Service premises.

The theme for this year’s celebration was “Thirty Years of Consolidating Constitutional Democracy: Building National Cohesion through Civic Education and Participation in Local Governance”.

The resource person for the programme was Ms. Mercy Essien, Deputy Regional Director of Central Region, NCCE.

Ms. Mercy Essien spoke about the challenges of the 4th Republican Democracy mentioning perceived acts of corruption as a major socio-economic problem. She said security threats from traditional sources, which includes chieftaincy and ethnic conflicts, land disputes, vigilantism and cyber security issue, and growing mistrust between the citizens and some elements of the country’s security services are also major concerns. She charged the security services to revive and build confidence and trust with communities as part of measures to ensure the re-engineering of a positive security-civilian relationship, peaceful co-existence, and national cohesion.

She urged the audience to participate in this year's District Level Elections (DLEs) to boost voter turnout, which has consistently been low in past DLEs. Marginalized groups such as women, the youth, and Persons with Disability (PWDs) were also encouraged to offer themselves as candidates.

In attendance were Assistant Chief Fire Officer One (ACFO1) John Amarlai Amartey, Central Regional Commander of Ghana National Fire Service, Divisional Officer Grade 1 (DO1) Vincent Asumang, and other officers.
